"Some men pick up a gun to look tough. To try and let people know he doesn't mess around. Some pick it up to protect their kin. To make sure their lives are safe. Men have asked me why I pick up my gun. Why I bother to kill ruthless men. Dealing with darkness every single day. If I told you it was all for the money I'd be lying. If I told you I was your regular bounty hunter I'd be telling a falsehood. In fact I don't think I really like that term. Call me a champion-for-hire. Something like those old knights of yore, what were they called? Paladins? Not every one of my jobs deals with killing. In fact I'd prefer to avoid it, all things considered. I still take on the occasional bounty poster, and I try to capture criminals alive. But admist all the gunsmoke it's difficult to do that. Why do I pick up the gun? I can't give you a solid reason. Let's just say I love the way it feels."

PERSONALITY
Roland is a very no-nonsense gunfighter of the 1800s, with exceptional skill and a rare high education. Jokes usually fly over Roland's head and it will take him a minute to get them, but once he has he will usually laugh along if he's amused or scowl if it doesn't. Roland has no time for immaturity and will usually accost the person acting as such. Roland has pretty average views, believing in your standard "right" and "wrong" scale but believing he balances on either side. Roland is very respectful of the dead and believes that graverobbing is a complete sin. When asked about his religion, Roland is a devout Christian to the point of believing that marriage is between a man and a woman, but doesn't look down his nose at homosexuals. While he is a bit wary of African Americans and the Japanese/Chinese, he also holds no racist views toward them.
As far as his opinion on the law is concerned, Roland is willing to cooperate but at the same time work outside the local lawmen. As a former member of the United States military, lawmen may or may not know of Roland before his time as a traveler. It is fair to say that Roland is always expecting of the Indians "kill first, ask questions never" attitude and will always have his gun ready to take them down if asked. Speaking of his skills with weapons, Roland is in no way arrogant but has yet to lose a duel or gunfight due to his intelligence more than his skill with a firearm. While Roland is highly intelligible, however, his trigger finger and instinct are very keen and like many typical gunfighters in the media he is able to shoot things such as tin cans right in the middle off a fence. Roland is a very dangerous man but is compassionate and considerate of others, which is why beside the money he is willing to help out people.
Optimism and pessimism play no role in Roland's life, his entire view in that spectrum being realism. Roland tells it like it is but is willing to break down bad news and, while still getting it all out, be gentler than most. As gentle as a 40 year old gunslinger can be. Despite the rough and tumble stereotype of 1800s men, Roland is a very classy gentlemen and on some occasions has worn suits and bought expensive things you wouldn't see someone of his life usually buy. Why? Because he requires at least 1,000 dollars which is a lot during this time period for each job he undertakes. He is willing to negotiate the price depending on the severity of the job however. All in all, Roland is a mysterious but otherwise kind individual who isn't afraid of dirtying his hands but will never lose his honor.
